about

Chillifunk are proud to present the rebirth of T Kolai with this release of the single ‘Why’ from the critically acclaimed ‘Teak All Eye’ album first released in 2001. This release includes the remastered version of the original album mix and new remixes from L+T Project and Rude Boy Rupert.

T.Kolai is Taha Elroubi & Nicolas Laget, the collaborative effort of DJ T and flautist/saxophonist Kolai (Nicolas Laget). This core duo never misses an opportunity to include in their music the many talented musicians which reside around the Washington DC area.

The original mix is an afro jazz journey featuring the searing vocals of the late great Mustafa Akbar, accompanied by the amazing musicianship of the T Kolai band. Taha recalls;

‘This track started off as an instrumental as it was produced on the day of 911. It wasn’t until our vocalist, our vocalist Mustafa Akbar, drove by the studio and started writing lyrics to it. The track included many of Washington DC’s premier musicians, William Smith on the soprano saxophone, Dejando on bass, David Cosby on guitar, Tony Tavaras on the rhythm section and Nicolas Laget on keys and strings. The song evolved from the mass destruction of the twin towers as Mustafa was asking the question, 'why' can't we live together as one people?

The L+T Project remix sees the duo taking it somewhere new with their signature mix of electronic and acoustic production on this deep soulful house rework making the most of the amazing vocal from the original.

Rude Boy Rupert drops his unmistakable broken beat production with this serious piece of dancefloor business. Synth bass and vocal chops set the bed for the main vintage piano riff, Rhodes flourishes and deep pads.

One not to be missed people!
